Puppetry

ich glaube das ist was kunst ist - study, 2024. Photography by Richard Termine.

Proficient in Bread and Puppet’s “cheap art” aesthetic, Madeline makes scrappy yet effective puppets ranging from shadow, crankie, hand-and-rod, tabletop, and mask work. She is a visual storyteller and physical performer who excels at using found objects to define characters and shape environments.

Open Theater Workshop’s THE DYBBUK: OR, BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

The Dybbuk by S. An-sky (written 1913-1916) is a gothic romance between two young lovers, a mythological tale about a broken promise, and a folkloric snapshot of Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement as interpreted by writer and ethnographer An-sky. Incorporating klezmer music, Yiddish folk dance, and shadow puppets based on traditional paper cutting, this community-focused production of the rarely staged Russian-Yiddish play will be the culmination of an innovative, year-long creative process that began with a series of free theater workshops hosted by Philadelphia’s Open Theater Workshop.

Lead puppeteer and designer. Performed at the Louis Bluver at the Drake in 2025.
